Planning a Kitchen Remodel for your Southern Louisiana Home

So you’ve decided to remodel your kitchen. Latest studies show that a kitchen remodel is the number one item on the Southern Louisiana home owners’ remodeling wish list.

If you’re like most people you’ve spent time looking online at kitchen designs and at home improvement and kitchen remodeling magazines and maybe you’ve found a certain type of counter top or flooring that you really love or a range or refrigerator you feel like you have to have. That’s time well spent. Your next step is to develop a plan.

Set a Budget and Stick with It

Before you get too far into planning your kitchen remodel, you need to determine a budget. Planning around a budget does take discipline. Most of your savings will come from careful planning. Be prepared to spend all the time you need to develop your plan.

The main costs for kitchen remodels are appliances and cabinets, so the best place to start your
plan is to decide how much you want to spend on these items. Try to keep your emotions out of the planning process as much as possible. You may have to substitute that 48” stainless steel Sub Zero refrigerator or a 60” custom Viking range you can’t live without for something more within your budget. Cabinet costs can vary from very expensive custom exotic woods to relatively inexpensive stock cabinets. Check out the new counter top laminates on the market before you decide on natural stone or composites. Inexpensive doesn’t have to mean inferior quality, and cost savings can be substantial.

Kitchen Design – Thinking Outside the Triangle

Most Southern Louisiana homeowners are familiar with the kitchen work triangle. The rule of thumb is just making sure the distance between your range, sink and refrigerator forms a triangle less than about 28 feet with each side no more than 9 feet long. Not all kitchen designs will fall into this standard, however. If you have 2 sinks for instance, or more than one cook in the kitchen at a time you will need to modify this design to include more than one work triangle. Measure your kitchen, sketch out a plan on graph paper or use free design software available online. Just remember to try and keep the work stations free from thru traffic.
